Individuals Coming Off Slimming Jabs Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that patients who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain lost weight far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People using these treatments need to be informed of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a reversion to starting mass in about 18 months.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through dieting typically experience a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Doctors propose the way of the injections accounts for the heightened weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Disease?

The NHS advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Accounts

Individuals who have discontinued the medication explain a intense resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if a switch activating and you become extremely hungry," said one woman.

This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians stress that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and long-term success relies on combined behavioural support.
